HOW IT WORKS

The work we do together

Singing lessons are more than technique. They are a place where your voice can breathe.

Yes I’ve worked with lots of big name artists over the years; backstage at Wembley, at AIR studios, for film and TV …..BUT I also work with just as many dedicated aspiring artists, complete beginners sometimes. People who want to see what their voice can do…..

All voices want to be free to express themselves in their own unique way.
That’s my work.

Wherever you’re starting from, I’ll support the evolution of your voice and your artistry. So you can express what’s inside.

Please read ‘getting started’ below.

“Jen was the piece of the puzzle that was missing for me. I started working with her and everything changed!” – Emily

Getting started

Everything begins with an honest chat. I will set up a free 15 minute zoom. I want to know where you’re at, what’s been missing for you and how I can support you. If it feels like a good fit we can discuss how we can structure a pathway forwards.

I work in a bespoke way with every person, every artist, to ensure everyone gets the support they need.

If my work really speaks to you, there is always a way to make it work, because that’s what artists do – we make it work!

ONLINE sessions

Single Sessions

For focused, one-off support — performance preparation, vocal issues, or creative recalibration.

Ongoing Artist Work – MOST POPULAR

This work is most effective when approached as an ongoing process rather than a one-off fix. Regular weekly or fortnightly sessions enable me to support the long term evolution of your voice, expression, and artistry.

These sessions are highly evolving and accompanied by an online portal where you can share your thoughts, practise sessions, scribbles, heart with me between sessions.

This is an immersive process.

IN PERSON

Intensive (London)

I offer half-day intensives in London. These sessions are typically for artists working at a professional level or within label-supported projects. I have offered industry level coaching for over 25 years. Sessions are quoted on a bespoke basis. An online session is required in advance.

Bespoke Retreats

I offer a limited number of immersive, in-person retreats (weekend or week-long), designed for deep, focused work on your voice and artistry.

These are intensive, high-level containers where we step fully into your creative process — away from day-to-day distraction.

Retreats are arranged on a bespoke basis, depending on the nature of the work and timing.

An online session is required in advance so we can get to know one another.

FAQS – the questions I often get asked….

  • Can anyone sing?

Absolutely—if you can speak, you can sing.
And not just sing, but sing in a way that’s real, resonant, and unmistakably yours. Most people think singing is about talent or “good” vs. “bad.” But what I’ve seen over 25+ years is this: The voice responds to attention, not perfection. It opens when it feels safe. It strengthens when it’s met with honesty. It becomes extraordinary when you stop trying to sound like anything except yourself. Some people arrive with experience; others not. It doesn’t matter where you begin. What matters is whether you have the desire—the hunger—to discover the voice beneath your habits, your fears, and your self-editing. If you’re willing to do that deeper work, your voice will grow. Your artistry will deepen. And the sound that emerges will be one you can stand behind with your whole self.

In our work together—whether online or in person, privately or in a group—you’ll learn to: develop true technical mastery, strip away the layers that silence or constrain you, uncover the raw, honest sound that belongs only to you, build confidence rooted in truth, not performance become the artist you know you’re capable of being. Singing isn’t a trick. It’s an act of expression. It’s a path of becoming. So yes—anyone can sing. But more importantly: anyone can find their voice. And that’s the work we do here.

  • How long does it take to learn to sing?

Learning to sing is not a quick fix — it’s a creative and vocal evolution. Like any meaningful craft, singing improves over time, and we humans often overestimate what we can achieve in the short term while underestimating what’s possible with consistent, long-term commitment.
Working with your voice is a process of uncovering, strengthening, and refining. You will likely notice shifts very quickly — many clients feel changes in their first session — but the deeper transformation comes through habituation, embodiment, and ongoing creative practice.

This work isn’t just about “learning to sing.” It symbolises a way of life; a new, expressive way of living and creating. When you engage fully with the process, the results can be profound: a stronger voice, a clearer artistic identity, and a far deeper confidence in your expression. This is vocal coaching for adults who want growth, truth, and real artistry — not shortcuts.

  • I'm a complete beginner, will you work with me?

Many high-end teachers simply won’t work with beginners. I’ve always loved guiding beginners and witnessing their extraordinary transformation. This sets me apart.

  • How are you different from other teachers?

I bring over 10,000 hours of experience in every element of Expressive Voicework®, which means I can support both complete beginners and established artists — and often guide clients from one to the other.
My work goes far beyond traditional vocal coaching. I’m dedicated to truth, artistry, and creative freedom. You will be seen, heard, and valued for who you are and who you’re becoming.

Throughout our time together, you’re welcome to share your creative process with me — your recordings, ideas, journals, rituals, or reflections. This isn’t required, simply offered. Many clients find that knowing I genuinely care, and that I’m walking alongside them, changes everything.

  • What's the difference between a vocal coach and a singing teacher and an artist mentor?

The truth is that if you are working as a singing teacher or vocal coach, especially if you work with clients of all ability levels, there is likely to be a lot of cross over.

A singing teacher may focus more on technique; breath control, pitch accuracy, vocal range development. And a vocal coach may focus more on the interpretative aspects of singing, such as phrasing, dynamics, emotional expression, and performance techniques etc. But both are required for great singing.

As an artist mentor, I help you develop your creative identity, strengthen your artistic voice, and navigate the deeper emotional and expressive aspects of being a singer or singer-songwriter. It’s about your growth as an artist, not just your vocal development.

In my work, these three roles overlap. You receive technical training, expressive coaching, and artist development — all within one cohesive, supportive process.

  • Signed artist/ management/ record company info.

    Ok this is simple stuff.
*All Expressive Voice clients can be assured of the same service and confidentiality. Signed artists will not find themselves used as a marketing tool.
*Terms and conditions for signed and unsigned artists are the same and to be agreed upon by artist and payee (if this is not the artist themselves). *Where signed artists approach me directly they will be charged the same fee I charge to unsigned artists - whatever their experience. Record companies request a quote based on the work required.
*Please note, all sessions are pay to book. These are same rules for everyone. 🙂
*Please also note, not doubt like yourself, I am more interested in artistry than industry and this is my focus; the wishes of the artist, the desires of the artist, the wellbeing of the artist, the artistry of the artist.🙏 With grace, I am sincerely appreciative of your contacting me and the work we will do together.

  • Seeking artists/singers?

Please feel free to submit any material to my e-mail and I will be selective in it’s distribution amongst clients/colleagues.

  • How often should you have singing lessons, and how often should i practise?

In my experience, the most meaningful and transformative work happens through intensive periods — moments where we work regularly and your voice stays open, engaged, and alive. This is when the deeper shifts occur.
Weekly lessons offer solid continuity, and many clients choose this rhythm.
When lessons become too spaced out the energy cannot be held and momentum is gone. It’s simply human nature. If you want consistent, genuine progress, I encourage a rhythm that keeps you connected to your voice — whether that’s weekly or more immersive, depending on your capacity. My regular clients are welcome to share recordings, practise sessions, voice notes, reflections, or ideas with me between sessions. This helps maintain connection and momentum.

For practice, here’s what I recommend:
Beginners: start with short, consistent sessions – around 10–15 minutes every other day.
As your vocal awareness improves, you can gradually increase your practice time.
I suggest working artists practise around an hour a day.*
Always monitor how your voice feels. If you experience strain, tightness, or fatigue, stop immediately. Never push through pain.

*working artists likely sing 1–2 hours at a time onstage. Building vocal stamina, consistency, and resilience is part of preparing for that life. Longer, focused practice sessions over time will help you develop stamina.

  • What should you expect at singing lessons, and how do you train to sing?

Every Expressive VoiceWork session is built around you — your voice, your artistry, and the life you want to create. This isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” lesson; it’s a tailored, instinctive, high-level process that can integrate any of the core elements of Expressive VoiceWork:
    Technical Vocal Craft
(breath, range, resonance, stamina, vocal health)
    Primal Soul VoiceWork™
(embodied expression, truth, instinct, emotional connection)
    Artistry & Identity Development
    (song interpretation, storytelling, performance depth)
    Songwriting & Creative Craft
(lyric work, melody shaping, structure, honesty in writing)
    Self-Expression & Confidence Building
(for those who need permission as much as technique)
You can expect a structured yet flexible session — responsive to where you are and where you’re going.

    Some days that means:
    warm-ups and vocal technique
targeted exercises for range, strength or ease
applying technique directly into a song
    refining your artistry or performance
    working on your own material
    developing identity, expression, truth

    Other days it may mean:
    writing a song together
exploring the emotional story of your voice
    building a recording plan
    preparing for a studio session
    shaping your artistic direction

Throughout the process, you’ll receive personalised guidance, detailed feedback, and clear next steps so you always know how to train between sessions. You’ll also have access to a client portal, where you can share recordings, ideas, drafts, lyrics, performances, or reflections — anything that supports your journey. Some clients use it daily; some simply like knowing I’m there.

This work is designed to meet you at the level of your ambition — whether you’re building a career or reclaiming your voice.

  • How should I take care of my voice & vocal health?

Your voice is your instrument — and your responsibility.
Healthy, sustainable voice use is essential whether you’re an emerging artist, an established performer, or returning to your voice after years of silence.

    The basics matter:
Hydration: aim for steady water intake throughout the day (6–8 glasses is a good guide).
Rest: your voice needs downtime as much as your body does.
Warming up: gentle, intentional warm-ups prepare the vocal folds for singing or extended speaking.
Avoid strain: speaking over noise, shouting, forcing range, or using poor technique can create unnecessary tension.
Lifestyle: sleep, stress, nutrition, hormones, and emotional state all directly affect the voice.
    As a rule:
    vocal use should feel comfortable.
Discomfort is information — listen to it. If you experience hoarseness, pain, or persistent vocal issues for more than two weeks, it’s important to consult a medical professional (ideally a voice-specialist ENT). This is standard practice for all serious singers.

    And remember:
    Technique helps.
    Awareness helps.
    Care helps.
But ultimately, your voice is a living instrument — it needs attention, respect, and maintenance.

For a deeper look at vocal health and care, I’ve written a more thorough post here: https://expressivevoice.co.uk/taking-care-of-your-voice-essential-tips-for-singers/

  • What is my vocal range? What is the average vocal range, and what will it be after training?

Every voice is unique in its range, weight and timbre. Range can be described in simple layers: your comfort zone (around ½–1½ octaves), your working range (around 2 octaves with training), and your maximum range (often 3–4 octaves, much of which isn’t meant for public use).
Training won’t turn you into someone else — but it will expand your range, stabilise it, and help you understand your voice’s strengths, limits and individual beauty. Learning your own vocal landscape is invaluable for developing as a singer and artist.

  • How long are singing lessons?

At Expressive Voice, sessions are typically 50 minutes, which allows enough time for real work — warming up, technical development, songwork, and the deeper conversations that support your artistry and direction.
For clients who need a more accessible option while maintaining consistency, I can also offer 30-minute sessions. These shorter lessons can work well.
Whichever length you choose, what matters most is commitment and continuity — that’s where your voice grows, expands, and evolves.

  • I’m a terrible singer – Can you really teach me to sing?

Singing is a learned skill — not a genetic lottery. Whether you’ve learned from the radio, from friends, or never learned at all, your voice can improve. There is absolutely no shame in where you’re starting.
The idea that you must be “born with it” is simply untrue. In every other field we accept learning, growth, and evolution — singing is no different. With the right guidance, awareness, and consistency, your voice will change far more than you think.

  • Do you give adult singing lessons?

Do you give adult singing lessons?
Yes — I specialise in working with adults. Whilst most teachers work a lot with children, this has never been my specialty. My teaching career began with professional adult performers, and over the years I’ve expanded to work with adult learners at every level, including complete beginners.
Although I’ve taught under-18s in professional contexts (including at ArtsEd, preparing teens for film, TV and theatre), the core of my work has always been with adults.
It is never too late to learn something new, reconnect with your voice, or begin your artistic journey. Whether you’re exploring this for personal fulfilment or for professional development, adult singers of all ages are in the right place here!

  • Can you really learn to sing online?

    Yes. A thousand times yes.
If it didn’t work, I wouldn’t offer it.
Your voice needs attention, direction, and someone who can hear what’s really happening beneath the surface. Online sessions give us everything we need: clarity, intimacy, focus, and the ability to work with precision.
For many adults, online singing lessons actually create more consistency, deeper focus, and greater progress.
Some of my strongest, most devoted artists train entirely online.
The transformation is real — and powerful.
I've written a longer answer here.

  • I have a vocal health issue can you help?

If you’re experiencing a vocal injury or recurring vocal health issues, your first port of call should always be your GP. From there, you may be referred to a speech and language therapist — ideally one who specialises in working with singers.

I don’t personally work in vocal rehabilitation but there are many excellent teachers and therapists who do this work and are best placed to support you.

Sacred symbol image; music, singing is sacred, spiritual, it's healing, it comes straight from the heart.
