Songwriting: Inspiration, Perspiration & the Reality of Creative Work

by | Jul 4, 2024 | Songwriting & Musicality for Singers

Whilst I often talk about the flow of creativity, I don’t want to overly romanticise the process, perspiration is often required! Anyone who has embarked on a creative endeavour knows this truth. The process can be gruelling, demanding, and at times, downright painful. So if you’re experiencing this please know it’s perfectly normal! This reality was eloquently captured by Nick Cave, the iconic singer-songwriter, in an interview I watched this morning and thought I’d share with you his discussion on the sometimes arduous nature of creativity.

Nick Cave’s Candid Reflections on Creativity

To my amusement, Nick Cave, known for his profound lyrics and haunting melodies, described his time in the studio as a laborious journey, filled with moments of frustration and fatigue. And stated that by the time an album is finished, he can be sick to death of it. Noting that this is accompanied by a sense of relief and accomplishment that follows the completion, allowing him to move on to the next project.

The Healing Power of Honesty

This raw honesty and what could almost sound like negativity from Cave is incredibly healing and inspiring for most of us creatives, we are not alone! It dismantles the myth that creativity must always be an enjoyable experience and acknowledges that the process can be fraught with challenge and not always ‘fun’! For many musical artists, this perspective is a breath of fresh air. It validates their own struggles and reassures them that difficulty and dissatisfaction are part of the journey.

Perseverance Over Perfection

In a world that often glorifies instant success and effortless talent, Nick Cave’s perspective is a powerful reminder that true artistry involves perseverance and perspiration. It is a testament to the idea that great work often emerges from a place of struggle. The beauty of the creative process lies not in its ease, but in the resilience and dedication it demands.

Empowering the Aspiring Artist

For those navigating their own creative paths, embracing this reality can be incredibly empowering. It shifts the focus from the elusive pursuit of constant inspiration to the commitment to the craft itself. The understanding that it is okay for the process to be challenging can provide a sense of comfort and motivation to continue, even when the going gets tough.

Conclusion: Embrace the Struggle

So, the next time you find yourself struggling with a creative project, remember Nick Cave’s words. Embrace the struggle, acknowledge the difficulties, and take comfort in knowing that you are not alone. Creativity, after all, is not about having an easy journey, if that’s what you want you might wish to try something else!

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”   ― Terence McKenna
