We talk a lot about “knowing yourself” (now).
And that is really important.
But you don’t want to get stuck down that rabbit hole.
We don’t just need to know ourselves.
We need to express ourselves.
How We Hold Ourselves Back
It’s rarely dramatic.
It shows up in small, everyday ways:
- choosing what feels acceptable rather than what feels true
- toning things down
- overthinking instead of acting
- waiting until we feel “ready”
- keeping everything internal
Over time, that creates a gap.
Between who you are —
and how you’re actually living.
Self Expression Is Practical
Self expression isn’t just art.
It’s how you live.
- your space
- your clothes
- your voice
- your choices
- what you allow yourself to say and create
All of these are forms of expression.
And they’re often easier places to start than “making great work”.
Start Where It’s Real
You don’t need a big plan.
Start somewhere tangible.
- Does your environment reflect who you feel you are at your core?
- How about your clothes?
- How are you holding back what you want to say?
- Are you expressing what’s inside?
Not to impress.
To Express.
Why This Matters
When you don’t express yourself, you don’t feel like yourself.
You feel disconnected.
Flat.
Unsure.
And then you assume something is wrong.
But often, nothing is wrong.
You’re just not expressing what’s already there.
A Different Way To Think About It
Instead of asking:
“Who am I?”
Try asking:
“What am I not expressing?”
That question is usually much more honest.
Try This
Today, do one thing that feels slightly more like you.
Not perfect.
Not thought through.
Just true.
And notice what happens.
Closing
Self expression isn’t something you earn.
It’s something you allow.
Something you do.
