Vivienne Westwood on Creativity, Vision & Artistic Truth

The Courage to Create

I’ve always been captivated by Vivienne Westwood’s profound insights on life, culture and the importance of independent thought. Her belief that an artist’s true responsibility lies in revealing the truth of things, rather than chasing popularity. Agree or disagree, Westwood’s unapologetically opinionated stance is refreshing and inspiring.

The Pioneer of Punk Fashion

As a pioneering British fashion designer and cultural icon, Westwood played a crucial role in shaping the punk movement of the 1970s. Her designs were revolutionary, intertwining historical references with bold, rebellious aesthetics that challenged traditional fashion norms. Yet, her influence extended far beyond the realm of style. A passionate advocate for sustainability and ethical practices in fashion, she used her platform to tackle pressing social and political issues, becoming a voice for change in a consumer-driven world.

The Danger of a Culture Devoid of Thought

Westwood often warned against the dangers of a culture devoid of critical thought, insisting that we are “dangerously without culture” and, as a result, losing our capacity to think for ourselves. She argued that culture encompasses diverse perspectives throughout history, each offering unique emotional experiences that go beyond mere words. In her eyes, popular culture has led us to a passive acceptance of received opinions, which stifles our ability to engage actively with art.

Art’s True Responsibility

Art, according to Westwood, should not seek popularity. Instead, she contended that it relies on a few individuals who have the courage to pursue their unique visions. This is particularly poignant in today’s world, where the pressure for mass appeal often overshadows genuine creativity. She lamented that the abdication of responsibility by artists and intellectuals has resulted in a conformity of opinion, marking a civilisation in decline. In light of pressing challenges like climate change, she argued that art can empower individuals to understand the world and foster a sense of personal responsibility.

Creativity: A Legacy of Ideas

Furthermore, Westwood emphasised that creativity stems from building upon existing ideas, rather than starting from scratch. She believed that the disregard for tradition and the failure to acknowledge past achievements hinder our ability to innovate. By reconnecting with the ideas and values of previous generations, we can inspire the creativity necessary for a brighter future.

Embracing Westwood’s Legacy

In a world where the pursuit of instant gratification often overshadows meaningful engagement, Westwood’s call for critical thought and creativity is more relevant than ever. She reminds us that the value of art lies in its capacity to challenge, provoke, and inspire. Let’s embrace her legacy by nurturing our own creative expressions and advocating for a culture rich in diverse ideas and perspectives.

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”   ― Terence McKenna
