When we sing, the vocal folds must approximate cleanly and consistently during vibration.
Full closure does not mean squeezing or pressing. It means the folds approximate sufficiently for the intended sound without unnecessary air escape.
Clear tone sits between two extremes:
Breathy tone → incomplete closure
Pressed tone → excessive medial compression
Teaching clear tone helps singers avoid both.
BREATH PRESSURE BECOMES SOUND PRESSURE
The breath we release generates subglottal pressure beneath the vocal folds. When this pressure overcomes fold resistance, vibration occurs and acoustic energy is produced.
A more intense pressure wave is perceived as louder. A gentler wave is perceived as quieter.
Clear tone allows this air-to-sound conversion to happen efficiently.
Airflow and fold resistance must be proportionate.
Excess airflow relative to fold resistance can destabilise closure.

If a singer struggles to produce clear tone, one of three coordination patterns is usually present:
1. Under-Closure (Breath Dominant)
You may notice:

- Tone lacking density
- Increasing volume only adds more air
This is not constriction.
This is insufficient fold approximation.
The solution is not more breath — but more efficient closure timing.
2. Over-Correction Into Compression

If subglottal pressure is excessively high relative to fold resistance, closure may become unstable.
This can lead to:
- Breathiness

- Compensatory squeezing
- Increased fatigue
Loud or high singing is not achieved by blasting more air upward.
It is achieved by adjusting resistance and pressure proportionally.
LOUDER SINGING INVOLVES A LONGER CLOSED PHASE
In stronger singing, there is typically a longer portion of the vibratory cycle where the folds remain in contact (a higher closed quotient).
This allows pressure to build beneath the folds, contributing to increased acoustic intensity.
However:
Louder singing is not achieved by pushing air.
It involves coordinated increases in fold resistance and pressure — not airflow alone.
Excess airflow can destabilise closure and trigger compensatory tension.
TORSO STABILITY HELPS REGULATE AIRFLOW
Torso anchoring can assist in preventing sudden bursts of air.
This involves coordinated engagement of:
- Intercostals
- Deep abdominal stabilisers
- Pelvic floor balance
- Spinal stabilisers
The purpose is not to push, but to regulate pressure and maintain steady airflow.
The goal remains: the right amount of air at the right time.
CLEAR TONE IMPROVES ACOUSTIC EFFICIENCY
