Clarifying the Confusion Around Vocal Registers and Mechanisms
When we’re learning to sing, we often encounter labels like chest voice, mixed voice, head voice, and so on, to describe vocal sounds, “registers,” and qualities we use as singers. It helps to have a shared language for a shared experience.
The problem, as you’ve probably noticed, is that there are actually hundreds of terms in circulation, often used in non-uniform ways. No wonder singers and teachers get confused.
The “M” Terms
More recently, there’s been a move toward labels that refer to what’s actually happening at the vocal fold level when we sing. These are the M-terms (from research by Roubeau, Henrich, Castellengo and others), and they describe vibratory mechanisms, not styles or genres.
Think of them as:
“How the vocal folds are moving, before resonance and vowels mess with the sound.”
What Are the M-Terms?
M0
- Very slack vocal folds
- Very low airflow
- Often heard as vocal fry/creak
- Broadly, imperfectly labelled: “fry”, “creak”,
M1
- All layers of the vocal fold vibrate in a rolling, bottom-to-top pattern
- The vocalis/TA muscle is active (TA dominant)
- Broadly, imperfectly labelled: “chest”, “modal”
*please know there are many notes, volumes, thicknesses, colours of note that can be sung in this quality. It’s not just low, thick, dark.
M2
- The vocalis/TA muscle is released from the main vibration pattern (CT dominant)
- The cover (outer layers of the folds) does the vibrating
- The body of the fold is no longer participating in the same way
- Broadly, imperfectly labelled: “head” or “falsetto” (depending resonating shape, back-pressure, closure, control of the breath flow. Head voice is usually considered a more stable, “connected” version of M2).
M3
- Folds are stretched very tightly
- Only the very thin edges of the cover vibrate
- Broadly, imperfectly labelled: “whistle”, “flageolet”
Most of the time, we are singing in M1 or M2.
Important note**
The Break
If you sing up your range from bottom to top, there will be a point where your voice “wants” to transition – to change gear from one vibratory mechanism to another: M1 to M2. That moment is often called:
- the break
- the flip
- passaggio (in classical)
- gear change
As singers often don’t want a sudden break or flip in their voice they need to learn strategies to manage this area of the voice. This is where ‘mix voice’ often comes in.
“Mix” or “Mixed” Voice
In the M1/M2 framework you can’t mix mechanisms, you’re in one mechanism or the other. However, you can make acoustic and pressure adjustments, that will:
- Let an M1 vibration be taken higher than its “natural” gear-change point
- Let an M2 vibration be shaped to sound more speech-like, more “chesty” above the break
- Let an M1 vibration feel and sound lighter/thinner below the break

Learning to Take M1 (Broadly, “Chest Voice”) Higher
A crucial part of contemporary voice training is learning to take M1 vibration higher, above the natural break – safely.
This does not mean dragging thick, heavy, shouting chest up the scale. Instead, it means staying in M1, but changing the way it behaves by adjusting some of the below:
- resonance shape (vowel, twang, mouth and pharynx shape)
- volume and pressure (less brute force, more balance – A major breakthrough for many singers is realising that: You can sing M1 quietly. Chest is not defined by loudness or heaviness.)
- fold thickness (allowing CT to lengthen/thin the folds)
- overall “weight” of the sound (lighter, more agile quality)
- engagement of TA muscle fibres.
- twang
- Global tilt (resonance-shaping posture created by the extrinsic muscles – Vocal Process).
Done properly, extended M1 is not only safe—it’s essential for many pop/rock MT/gospel sounds.
Learning to Make M2 ‘Head Voice’ Stronger
Another option as you ascend your range is to make ‘head voice’ stronger. There are many adjustments that can help with this. Adjustments that are so successful that even an experienced singer/listener can be fooled by what’s actually going on!
Alterations again may include:
- resonance shape (vowel choice, twang, mouth shape, pharynx shaping)
- Onset choice; (a firmer, speech-like, clear, or slightly “bratty” onset)
- Variations in subglottal and supraglottal pressure (breath strategy, flow balance, SOVT effects, back-pressure)
- Vertical laryngeal position adjustments
- Vocal tract narrowing or widening
- “Whinge”, “cry”, “bratty”, or forward vowels (changes in tilt-like global posture and vowel placement)
So as you can see there are many ways to access the range and the range of sounds within the voice. This leads us vocal coaches to the creation of thousands of different exercises to enable you to move flexibly around your vocal range.
Final Thoughts: Labels Help Us Make Better Choices
The real value of using vocal labels is that they help us:
- Describe what we’re feeling and hearing
- Choose the sound we want on purpose
- Troubleshoot when something isn’t working
They should be treated as practical tools, not dogma:
- “Chest”, “head”, “mix”, “belt”, “falsetto” = useful descriptions
- “M1”, “M2”, etc. = useful mechanical models
Neither replaces the other; together they can give you more control, more safety, and more expressive freedom.

**Important note: A light M1 can sound/feel very different to a heavy/thick M1 leading people to label the sound differently. Equally M1 can be made to sound very similar to M2 and visa versa so it can be challenging to tell the difference at more advanced levels of practise.
***Note 2. Notice on your SOVT exercises that you voice will change gear lower than on your vowels. This is because the SOVTS remove the resonance, twang, pressure, and global tilt strategies that help you take M1 higher.
