Singers are often told:
“Don’t sing from your throat.”
“Open your throat.”
“Don’t constrict.”
But these phrases are rarely defined clearly.
Let’s clarify what constriction actually is — and how it relates to breath balance and vocal freedom.
What Is Constriction?
In singing, constriction refers to unnecessary inward squeezing in or around the larynx.
This can involve:
- Excess medial compression of the true vocal folds (hyperadduction)
- Supraglottic narrowing (including false fold involvement)
- Tongue root or pharyngeal tension
The defining features of constriction are:
- Increased effort
- Reduced airflow
- Higher collision force
- Fatigue over time
Why Constriction Happens
The larynx is fundamentally a protective valve.
It closes to:
- Protect the airway
- Stabilise during lifting
- Create internal pressure
When we sing, that same reflex can activate — especially when:
- Reaching high notes
- Trying to sing louder
- Feeling anxious
- Trying to “support” aggressively
The body interprets challenge as needing stabilisation.
The throat may respond by squeezing.
NOTE: Constriction vs Breathiness
These are opposite coordination patterns.
Breathy phonation:
- Incomplete closure
- Excess airflow
- Lower collision force
Constricted phonation:
- Excess closure
- Reduced airflow
- Higher collision force
Both can sound “unclear.”
But they require opposite solutions.
If you hear air escaping → airflow dominance.
If you hear reduced airflow and increased effort → compression dominance.
The Myth of “Open Throat”
There are no muscles that actively “open” the throat.
“Open throat” simply means reduced unnecessary inward pressure.
When singers describe a sensation of space, what’s often happening is:
- Reduced supraglottic narrowing
- Balanced airflow
- Lower laryngeal effort
- More efficient resonance shaping
You are not creating space.
You are removing interference.
A Practical Awareness Exercise
1. The ‘H’ Contrast
- Gently exhale on a soft, audible “Hhhh.”
Notice airflow moving. Keep effort low. - Exhale with the same gentle airflow but without audible friction (silent ‘H’).
Notice whether the throat feels quieter or less busy.
The purpose is not to open anything.
It is to observe airflow and effort.
If effort increases, reduce airflow.
2. The ‘Surprise’ Sensation
Adopt a mild expression of surprise:
- Slight lift of the cheeks
- Softly raised eyebrows
- Jaw released
This posture often encourages a natural lift of the soft palate and reduces the tendency to squeeze inward.
Add a gentle sustained vowel.
Notice whether the sound feels less effortful — not “more open,” but less compressed.
3. The ‘Lift’
Instead of thinking about widening the throat, think of buoyancy:
- Cheeks gently lifted
- Sternum comfortably elevated
- Back of neck free
When posture is organised and lifted (without stiffness), the larynx often does not need to stabilise through squeezing.
The lift is not tension.
It is structural organisation.
Monitoring Constriction Using a Hum Baseline
Instead of trying to “open” the throat, begin by establishing a low-effort phonation.
Start with a gentle hum:
“mmm”
Keep it quiet and easy.
Notice:
- The vibration
- The airflow
- The level of throat effort
Rate it on a 0–10 scale.
For most people, a gentle hum should sit around 1–3.
This becomes your baseline.
Now Compare
Move from the hum into a vowel:
“mmm → ah”
“mmm → hey”
“mmm → yay”
Keep the effort level the same.
If effort jumps when you leave the hum, compression is likely increasing.
The goal is to maintain low unnecessary effort as sound changes and not to associate volume with increased vocal fold effort.
Effort Scale Framework
On a 0–10 scale:
- 1–3 = efficient baseline
- 4–6 = increased load
- 7+ = likely unsustainable if prolonged
Volume should increase without dramatic spikes in throat effort.
If effort climbs sharply with volume, compression is likely driving the system.
Balanced singing feels organised — not squeezed.
Final Thought
Constriction is a coordination pattern involving excessive inward pressure and unnecessary muscular recruitment. “Open throat” is simply the absence of that excess effort. Clarity emerges from coordination — not from pushing, widening, or forcing space.
