The straw exercise is a simple, science-backed technique that helps you warm up efficiently, recover tired voices, and sing with less strain. Whether you’re preparing for a performance or trying to find your most comfortable vocal tone, this little tool can make a big difference.
What Are Straw Exercises Good For?
- Warming up and cooling down the voice
- Restoring tired or strained voices
- Improving vocal efficiency and breath coordination
- Reducing over-effort and vocal fatigue
- Balancing airflow and pressure at the vocal folds
How It Works
Straw exercises fall under the category of SOVT (Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract) exercises. These include simple sounds like humming (m, n), oo, zzz, vvv, lip or tongue trills, bubbles, and raspberries. All of these partially narrow the breath pathway. This narrowing creates gentle back pressure and reflected sound waves above the vocal folds.
What Research Shows (Titze)
Science: When you blow through a straw (or do any SOVT), gentle back pressure builds up above the vocal folds. This pressure slightly spreads apart the upper edges of the folds.
What it means for you: The folds don’t have to work as hard to vibrate, so phonation feels easier and freer.
Science: The inside (medial) surfaces of the folds can line up more parallel without you needing to squeeze them together, as long as your CT (stretching) and TA (thickening) muscles are balanced.
What it means for you: You get cleaner closure of the folds without “pressing” or straining.
Science: With the folds slightly apart and more parallel, the effort required to start and maintain sound — called the phonation threshold pressure — is lower.
What it means for you: You need less breath energy to make sound, which reduces fatigue.
Science: The vibration of the folds is smaller in amplitude and collision forces are lighter. This allows lung pressure and pitch to rise more easily during glides. The stretching of the folds also strengthens the vocal ligament, giving you better control at high pitches.
What it means for you: High notes feel easier and safer, with less “smack” between the folds.
Science: The first resonance of the vocal tract shifts lower (to about 200 Hz), so harmonics from 200–1500 Hz are more evenly reinforced. This prevents sudden register shifts and supports a smoother “mix.”
What it means for you: Register transitions (chest ↔ head voice) feel more connected and balanced.
Science: The acoustic properties of the vocal tract (its inertance) add to the back pressure, which lowers the phonation threshold pressure even further.
What it means for you: Even less effort is needed to sing, so your voice feels more efficient.
Most people notice the difference straight away.
Why the Straw?
There are many SOVT techniques: lip trills, fricatives (like “vvv” or “zzz”), and bubbling through water. But the straw gives you unique control over how much resistance you create.
Resistance is affected by:
- Straw width: Thinner = more resistance
- Straw length: Longer = more resistance
- Water depth: Deeper submersion = more resistance
- Multiple straws: More straws = less resistance
This means you can customise the experience to suit your voice and the task at hand.
Why Vary Resistance?
Different vocal tasks require different levels of resistance to achieve optimal voicing. You’re aiming for a setup that feels:
- Comfortable
- Resonant
- Easy and balanced
Experimenting helps you discover what works for your voice.
Exercise 1: Find Your Baseline Effort
Let’s start by discovering the least amount of effort needed to make a clear sound. This is your “baseline,” and knowing it helps prevent habitual overworking.
Step-by-step:
- Place your top teeth under your bottom lip and make a gentle “fff” sound.
- Keep that same energy and make a “vvv” sound.
- Place a straw in your mouth and make an “oo” sound down the straw.
(Pinch your nose to ensure the sound is going through the straw, not your nose.) - Now dip the straw 1 cm into a glass of water and repeat the sound.
- Try again with the straw 1 inch into the water.
- Notice:
- Is it easier or harder?
- Does your voice feel more resonant or effortful?
- Which depth or setup feels most comfortable?
Repeat on different notes. Then try it on a siren (gliding from low to high and back down).
Do higher notes feel better with a different resistance than lower ones?
Warm-Up: Gentle and Effective
Once you’re familiar with your ideal straw setup, use it for warm-ups:
Try this:
- 3–4 minutes of gentle siren sounds or pulses through the straw in water
- Focus on breath consistency, relaxed face, upright posture, and low abdominal support
You’ll likely notice your voice feels clearer, buzzier, and more resonant afterward.
Exercise Your Voice
Practise scales through the straw. A great one to try is the 1–5–1–8–1 pattern
Watch what happens to your vocal “break” (passaggio). Over time, the transitions often become smoother and more connected.
Try It With a Song
Let’s apply the straw to actual singing:
- Sing a line from a song of your choice.
- Notice how your voice feels and sounds.
- Now sing the same line down the straw into the water.
- Then sing it again without the straw.
- What changed?
- More ease or resonance?
- Less tension?
- Greater consistency?
Soon, you’ll be able to recreate that ease with or without the straw.
Why Use Water?
I am a big fan of using the straw in water. It has some extra benefits:
- Visual feedback: Aim for a consistent stream of bubbles
- Tactile awareness: You’ll feel small adjustments in pressure
- Vocal fold massage: The water adds gentle back pressure that soothes the voice
- Quick resistance control: Just change the depth for more or less effort
Troubleshooting
If you’re not getting the benefits yet, try adjusting:
- Too hard to blow? Use a wider or shorter straw
- No sound? Pinch your nose to prevent air escaping
- Bubbles too aggressive? Lighten your breath and sound
- Strained high notes? Try a different resistance. This should feel really nice.
Setting Up Your Straw
- Diameter: Best range is 2–5 mm (narrower = more resistance, wider = less).
- Length: 10–40 cm is effective (longer = more resistance).
- Water depth: Start with 1–2 cm; deeper = more resistance.
Important: The goal is easy, resonant sound — not pushing harder. If it feels tight or effortful, lighten the load (wider straw, shallower water, or shorter straw).
Adjusting for Different Voice Types
- Pressed / tight voices
- Back pressure from the straw can help rebalance the squeeze.
- But too much load (very narrow straw or deep water) may make it harder to phonate.
- Breathy / weak closure voices
- A bit more resistance can help the folds meet more efficiently.
- Start gently — the goal is balance, not strain.
A Good Starting Point for Most Voices
3–5 mm wide, ~15–20 cm long, 1–2 cm in water.
