Part Two: Mastering Repetition & Contrast In Songwriting

by | Dec 1, 2023 | Songwriting & Musicality for Singers

In the first part of this series, we delved into the world of hooks and repetition, exploring how they create memorable and catchy tunes. Now, let’s turn our attention to the equally vital aspect of songwriting: crafting contrast. This aspect is crucial in giving your song depth, dimension, and dynamism. Contrast is what transforms a good song into a great one, taking your listeners on a journey through varied emotional and musical landscapes. Here, we will explore how creating distinct sections, varying melody and rhythm, and incorporating diverse structural elements can elevate your songwriting to new heights.

Creating Distinct Sections
A song often journeys through various contrasting landscapes. Altering elements like melody, chords, and rhythm helps in making each section of a song – the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and outro – uniquely identifiable.

Melodic and Rhythmic Variation
Varying the placement of melody, its pitch range, and voice timbres can significantly affect a song’s feel. Techniques like sustain, staccato, and strategic pauses add complexity and interest.

Structural Elements Beyond the Basics
Varying the rhyme scheme, plot development, and character perspective enriches the song’s storytelling power, making it more engaging and relatable.

Enhancing Song Structure: A Detailed Look at Verse and Chorus

A few things you might consider when looking to create contrast in a song:

Melody

  • Melodic Rhythm: Before, on, or after the beat?
  • Note Length: Sustained or staccato?
  • Melody Notes: Tones on chord or other key notes?
  • Melodic Shape: Rising, falling, stationary, spikes?
  • Pitch: Raised or lowered average pitch?

Words

  • Language: Abstract or conversational?
  • Tense: Past, present, future?
  • Narrative Perspective: Who’s talking – he, she, I?
  • Space and Pauses: Usage in contrast to words.
  • Line Length: Variation in length.
  • Rhymes: End-of-line or internal?

Harmony

  • Chord Choices: What chords are used?
  • Rate of Chord Change: Speed of changes.
  • Harmonic Progressions: Nature of progressions.
  • New Chords: Introduction of new chords.
  • Added Note Chords: Use of 9ths, 2nds, etc.
  • Rhythm: Syncopated or straight?

Additional Considerations

  • Dynamic Change: Variation between sections.
  • Instrumentation: Differences in use.
  • Backing Vocals (BVS): Usage in sections.
  • Emotion: Evoked emotions in each part.
  • Voice Colours/Timbres: Different voice qualities.
  • Rhyme Scheme: Variation in scheme.
  • Plot Development: Evolution of the plot.
  • Form: Use of structures like ABA for contrast.

Conclusion
Songwriting, an art form rich in repetition and contrast, involves creating music that is not only catchy but also emotionally resonant and narratively deep. Mastering these elements transforms simple tunes into unforgettable musical masterpieces, taking listeners on a memorable journey.

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”   ― Terence McKenna
