Performance Anxiety & Singing: A Journey Of Bravery & Connection

by | Oct 6, 2024 | Self Expression & Confidence Building

The Bold Act of Performing

Standing up in front of an audience and singing is, without a doubt, one of the boldest and most vulnerable acts we can undertake. It’s a declaration of self, a sharing of emotion, and a connection with others. And yet, for all its challenges, it’s also one of the most exhilarating experiences imaginable.

For me, performing has become one of life’s greatest, scariest, brilliant pleasures—an opportunity to express, connect, and share something deeply human.

It’s Not Just About Us

At first glance, performing might feel all about us (this is what makes us feel nervous) —after all, the spotlight is literally on us. But I was once offered a beautiful piece of advice by the inspiring, amazing singer songwriter Jane Siberry. She suggested that she felt part of her role was to take care of the audience, to look after them. To welcome them to the space, after their busy, chaotic day. This instantly takes your focus off your own feelings about being in the spotlight.

Her perspective shifted something fundamental in me. When we perform, we’re not just standing alone under the lights; we’re creating a shared moment. This isn’t about me; it’s about us. The audience, the space, the music—we are all part of something bigger than ourselves.

Anchoring Yourself in the Moment

I’m not saying performance anxiety isn’t real, it is and it’s totally normal and a natural part of the experience. The trick, I’ve found, is to get present with others in the space, to get present with the moment:

  • Arrive fully.
  • Breathe deeply.
  • Ground yourself physically.

This is our moment—not just yours or theirs, but a collective experience. When you step into that shared space, it becomes a privilege to be part of something so immediate and alive.

You Don’t Need To Try Too Hard

One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is that you don’t have to force anything or to try too hard. Vulnerability itself is a strength—bravery and vulnerability are often two sides of the same coin.

It’s okay to feel exposed, even scared. Those feelings are part of the journey. Be open about it, who cares? We’ve come this far right!?!

Finding What You Love

Every performer has their preferences and rituals, and discovering yours is a joy. For me, there’s nothing quite like standing in a pool of red light in front of an expectant audience. That anticipation, that connection—it’s electric.

And yes, I am afraid but I’m also excited in equal measure because I want to live fully and I want to feel life pulsing through my veins and I want to be someone whose ego is ok with whatever is.

Embrace the Fear and the Joy

So embrace it all – I have numerous exercises that can help you. It’s the energy that reminds us we care, that we’re alive, and that we’re stepping into something extraordinary. And that we’re human and can also royally f*ck up, that’s kind of beautiful too. 🙂 It’s all part of life.

When we approach performing as a shared experience, when we ground ourselves in the moment, and when we let our vulnerability shine, we transform our fear into connection, and our anxiety into art.

What could be more perfect than this?

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”   ― Terence McKenna
