Why Singers Should Play an Instrument | Vocal Coach Tips

by | Jan 28, 2024 | Artist Development for Singers, Songwriting & Musicality for Singers

As a vocal coach specialising in expressive voicework and artist development, I encourage singers to develop a basic level of musicianship — and, ideally, to play an instrument. Singers are musicians, and having even a simple connection to piano or guitar can transform your confidence, creativity, and independence as an artist.

You do not need to become an advanced player. A few chords or a simple pattern can completely change your understanding of music and unlock new layers of expressive possibility.

Why Learning an Instrument Helps Singers

Deepens your musical ear

When you play an instrument, you begin to understand harmony, rhythm, and musical structure in a more embodied way. This naturally improves your phrasing, musical instincts, and interpretive choices.

Makes songwriting far easier

Playing an instrument — even very simply — gives you the ability to build chord progressions, shape melodies, and explore your own ideas. It removes the mystery of songwriting and makes creativity more fluid and intuitive.

Improves pitching and timing

Instrumental practice strengthens your internal sense of pitch and pulse, especially if you sometimes struggle with tuning or rhythm. Instruments give clear feedback that your voice alone can’t.

Allows you to practise independently

Being able to accompany yourself, even with one hand on piano or a few chords on guitar, gives you huge artistic freedom. It lets you rehearse emotionally, slowly, responsively — without being tied to backing tracks.

Helps you be taken seriously as a musician

Singers can sometimes be unfairly treated as “separate” from other musicians. When you play an instrument, even at a basic level, it signals musical understanding and often creates deeper artistic respect.

Learning an Instrument Doesn’t Need to Be Complicated

Many singers feel intimidated by the idea of learning piano or guitar — but it doesn’t have to be difficult, and it certainly doesn’t need to be classical.

You can learn basic skills quickly:

  • Piano: simple triads, broken chords, and patterns you can use immediately
  • Guitar: easy open chords and strumming patterns
  • Songwriting tools: how harmony works, how to find the right key, how to build your own songs

Even a single lesson can help you begin using an instrument as a creative companion rather than a barrier.

If you prefer to explore on your own, beginner-friendly online tutorials are everywhere. Start small, be playful, and grow from there.

How I Support Singers With This

Whether you are a beginner or returning musician, I can incorporate instrumental basics directly into our sessions.
You might:

  • learn the chords to a song you love
  • explore how harmony shapes emotional expression
  • discover how songwriting works on a practical level
  • accompany yourself on a simple pattern while focusing on emotional delivery

The goal isn’t perfection — it’s expressive freedom, creative independence, and the ability to shape your own artistic world.

Industry Reality: Versatility Matters

Many contemporary music programmes now expect singers to have some instrumental ability. It’s becoming a standard skill in the modern music landscape, especially for singer-songwriters and developing artists.

Learning an instrument positions you as a more well-rounded, independent, and confident musician.

Final Thoughts

Playing an instrument is one of the most valuable things a singer can do for artistic growth. It opens your ears, expands your creative world, and supports your vocal expression in ways technique alone cannot.

If you’d like to learn how to integrate an instrument into your singing practice — gently, creatively, and in a way that supports your unique voice — you’re welcome to reach out. I’d love to help you build a musical foundation that truly supports your artistry.

“Nature loves courage. You make the commitment and nature will respond to that commitment by removing impossible obstacles. Dream the impossible dream and the world will not grind you under, it will lift you up. This is the trick. This is what all these teachers and philosophers who really counted, who really touched the alchemical gold, this is what they understood. This is the shamanic dance in the waterfall. This is how magic is done. By hurling yourself into the abyss and discovering it’s a feather bed.”   ― Terence McKenna
